Tips for Goal Setting

Set Goals Without Overwhelm

Here we are, another January, and everyone is setting goals. If you are like me, you also desire to make goals and find new opportunities for growth this year. Even though I am excited, I know how overwhelming it can be.

Regardless of how many goals you want to set, I have four tips to help you achieve your goals.

Be Intentional

My first tip is to choose goals that are meaningful to you. Don’t pick 10 random goals simply because your friend has 10 she is working on this year. Make sure your goals are intentional and will help you improve your life in the direction you desire. A great way to choose goals is to look at your values and have them inform you of what you want to focus on. I have a Values Exercise that can easily inform you of your values. Prioritize Your Goals

I recommend you begin taking action with your goals by starting with your most important ones. Which goal is your number one? Which goal are you most excited about?

It is important to start with building just one goal at a time, or else you may feel overwhelmed by all the new habits and steps you are adding to your already busy routine. Start with the goal that will be the most impactful to your life.

Group Goals

Now for my friends that have five or more goals, I recommend you start by adding just one or two to your daily routine. Incorporating these small goals into your already set patterns will make them easier to achieve.

A great book to read on changing behaviors/setting goals is Atomic Habits by James Clear. He gives a great suggestion of adding a new behavior to an already established one. For example, if you want to develop of the habit of walking in the morning, connect it to the habit of brushing your teeth. Layout your walking clothes/shoes in the bathroom the night before and as soon as you’re done brushing your teeth in the morning get dressed and walk out the door.

Once a couple of goals you worked on have become habits, you can move on to the next group. Approaching goal setting like this will prevent goals from becoming overwhelming, and they will become more attainable.

Avoid “All-or-Nothing” Thinking

Now for my final tip, let me offer there is no need for an all-or-nothing mindset. It is okay if you slip up and miss a day or however you are measuring your goals.

Maybe you decided to exercise for an hour every day, but one day you only did 30 minutes or maybe no exercise at all. That’s okay! Just because you don’t hit your goal everyday does not mean you need to stop trying! Consistency plus time will get you the results you want. Achieving goals requires perseverance and showing up.
