Summer Joy and Fall Structure: You Can Have Both
Every August, the internet jokes about how everyone is trying to get something different out of the month—and the debate between fall and summer begins again.
You might feel overwhelmed about which “camp” to join. Summer lovers want to squeeze in every last pool day, while fall lovers are already buying pumpkins and sweaters.
The best thing to remember is that life isn’t usually either/or. We can hold on to the joy of summer while welcoming the structure of fall—without going to extremes.
Let Go of Either/Or Thinking
We often treat our goals as extremes too. We think there is no room for error or deviation and that we must follow the plan exactly.
However, that simply isn’t feasible. Life changes, our needs change, and sometimes our plans need to change too.
Flexible thinking doesn’t mean you aren’t committed to your goals. It means you’re creating a way to pursue them that works with your life instead of against it.
Productivity and Relaxation Can Coexist
It’s not a choice between productivity and relaxation. Sometimes being productive can actually feel relaxing.
For example, cleaning your home can feel like taking a weight off your mind—especially when you do it while listening to fun music or a great audiobook.
Productivity doesn’t always have to feel rushed, stressful, or intense. It can create a sense of calm and make more room for you to enjoy your life.
Rest Is Not Laziness
It’s also not a debate between being disciplined and being lazy.
Needing to rest does not make you lazy. It makes you human!
Taking time to rest can help you remain consistent and avoid burnout. You’re allowed to take a break without turning it into evidence that you lack discipline or motivation.
Rest supports your progress. It doesn’t erase it.
Healthy Growth Makes Room for Both
You can work hard and enjoy your weekends.
You can save money and budget for fun.
You can pursue your goals and rest.
Human beings are complex, so it makes sense that we can value and enjoy things that appear to be opposites. Healthy growth makes room for both ends of the spectrum rather than forcing us to choose one extreme.
Balance Gives You Freedom
As you carry part of summer with you and welcome fall into your life, consider how both can exist at the same time.
You can enjoy one more summer evening while preparing for a new routine. You can create structure without removing spontaneity. You can make progress while being kind to yourself.
Ultimately, balance isn’t boring. It gives you freedom.
